About us

Who we are

Kent Law Society (KLS) was established in 1818, and lays claim to being one of the oldest Law Societies in the country. Many of our former Presidents have become President of the Law Society of England and Wales, including Richard Atkinson for the all-important Bicentennial year, and KLS continues to “punch above its weight” in terms of influence and reach.

We are a not-for-profit organisation which exists to promote the interests of the legal profession here in Kent. We aim to provide a strong voice for the whole profession, promoting common links which bind us through professional and social interaction across the county and beyond. We maintain trusted relationships with key participants, including our sponsors and look to encourage potential and new entrants into the profession.

I first got involved with Kent Law Society when my then Chief Crown Prosecutor became President. It has enabled me to connect with the National Law Society as a Council Member, a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDIC), a member of the Ethnic Solicitors Network, and as Chair of the International Committee. Being a member of KLS has additionally enabled me to expand my connections with like-minded professionals both in the UK and in Europe, whilst also giving me the opportunity to give back to the next generation of lawyers. Do join us – we would love to have you, and you’ll be glad you did!!

Getting involved with Kent Law Society, when I was working very part time whilst raising a young family, has opened up so many doors for me. Enabling me to network with other like-minded professionals and to get involved with a dynamic organisation where change can happen.

I would encourage anyone to get involved, you can make a difference and will also learn so many transferable skills that will help you in your own practice area.

Being a member of Kent Law Society has helped me both in my career and personal growth in so many ways. KLS helped me grow in confidence when I wasn’t sure where my place in the industry was. Before I joined KLS I was very shy and preferred to hide in the shadows and let others speak for me.

As a young junior lawyer, it can be very overwhelming finding my way in the legal profession, but with the support of Kent Law Society, I have managed to find my place and progress in my career in more ways than I could ever imagine. I no longer hide in the shadows, I am often the one speaking to hundreds of people at the front of the room! (something I never thought I would have the confidence to do!)

I love attending the wide range of events that KLS have to offer, from in-person networking to online webinar training, they really do have something for everyone! I have met so many amazing people in the legal profession and made some great friends who are always there to offer guidance whenever I need it.

I really would recommend being a member of KLS.
