As a not-for-profit organisation, Kent Law Society is the voice of the profession in the County and exists to promote the interests of the legal profession in Kent. It regularly brings individuals together through social and professional activities and has been successful at building and maintaining trusted relationships with other key participants, including other professionals, MPs and the judiciary.
The membership is over 500 strong and comprises in-house lawyers, fee earners and legal professionals in private practice, and trainee legal professionals and students all of whom work and/or live in Kent.
The Society was formed in 1818 as an association of solicitors in the County and today promotes its members (to include all variations of legal professionals such as academics, CILEX, Solicitors, paralegals, trainees and students) and the County of Kent as a place to access high-quality legal services. It campaigns for equal access to justice and for the efficient delivery of legal services in the County.
Its work includes:

Situations vacant and wanted page on KLS website.
Highly informative website providing a focal point for its day-to-day activities and information for members.
Organising networking events for JLD and Trainee Solicitors and representing their interests - including JLD and Trainee Solicitor representatives sitting on its General Purposes Committee (“GPC”).
Liaising with officials on issues affecting the profession both in Kent and beyond (including a Parliamentary Liaison Officer sitting on GPC) – as part of the County Societies Group of Local Law Societies, representing some 5000 lawyers, it has a powerful voice.
Arranging events to which all Kent MPs are invited to highlight issues affecting their constituents.
Responding to national consultations affecting the profession, driven from the GPC.
Maintaining a Criminal Law Sub-Committee, reporting to the GPC but comprising both KLS members and non-members, to raise the profile of issues affecting this area of law, and holding regular meetings with the Chief Constable for Kent and his senior officers to raise issues of concern and improved efficiency in the criminal law process.

Running an AGM prior to the Annual Dinner.
Hosting an Annual Awards Competition to recognise and promote the outstanding lawyers of the County, senior and junior, at the Annual Dinner.

Hosting an Annual Memorial Lecture at the University of Kent with highly prominent speakers and providing networking opportunities between its members and UKC.
Maintaining extremely close links with local barristers’ chambers and the judiciary.

Holding events with the Barreau de Lille (with which Kent Law Society is twinned) and the Balie West Vlaanderren (with whom we have a moratorium of understanding) in order to provide training and networking for members in the law of neighbouring jurisdictions.
Its Officers attending a variety of events across the County on behalf of the Society to raise the profile of the Society and further its influence.
In addition to the above, Kent Law Society is building on its PR and marketing efforts. This will help to ensure our members are aware of what is happening in the profession, alert the public to our existence, be the voice of our members and promote the brand and reputation of solicitors and legal practitioners as providing quality advice across the County.
